Equality and diversity

For the two pieces of evidence required for this module you will need a general understanding of:

1. Our trust equality and diversity policy (and its aims).

2. How to produce personal statements.

Evidence 1: Understanding of Equality and  Diversity (E&D)

Please read the two following paragraph sections that have been taken from local policy regarding E&D:

Equality, diversity and inclusion

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust is committed to ensuring diversity is recognised and equality is embedded at the heart of everything we do, whether this be for staff, patients, carers or visitors to our trust.

Equality and diversity patients and service users

The trust is committed to the fair treatment of all patients and service users, regardless of age, colour, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender reassignment, nationality, race, religion or belief, responsibility for dependents, sexual orientation, or any other personal characteristics.

Write a paragraph on your understanding or E&D and how it applies to you in the work place:

Paragraph on your understanding of E&D:

Include the following in your paragraph:

  • What Equality means

  • What diversity means

  • What inclusion means

  • Who E&D applies to in the trust

  • What the benefits are, if everyone in the department understands and applies the E&D policy

Evidence 2: You will need to complete a personal statement for this piece of evidence - a personal statement is a piece of writing that you submit showing what you think about something.

Think about a situation, work activity or recent interaction with others that showed that you and others were treated fairly.

For example: Attending a departmental staff meeting

For the above situation you could try and answer the following questions to include in your statement:

  • What is the purpose of the staff meeting?

  • Who is invited to attend staff meetings?

  • Where is the meeting held / layout?

  • How does everyone get a fair chance to speak?

  • What happens if there is a disagreement?

Personal statement:

Activity or situation: (Brief summary of what happened):

How you were treated fairly:

How you treated others fairy:

Try and think of a situation or interaction that demonstrated fairness to everyone

Sign off: After you have collected each piece of evidence, hand them into your trainer / mentor who will then countersign them. Please note that they may ask for additional evidence or ask you follow up questions. Also ensure that:

  1. You have date and signed your work

  2. You only submit evidence for checking once it is completed (you may take individual evidence pieces out of your portfolio)

  3. Ensure any countersigned checked work is returned back (in order) to your portfolio

Try not to hand in multiple pieces of evidence for marking at once - this will create too much work for your trainer / mentor, instead spread your submissions out throughout your training.

Trainer notes: Ensure the candidates line manager completes the 'Line Manager's Comments' section as each module in the portfolio is completed - continuous assessment of the candidates work is required throughout the training period.
