Sample disposal

Evidence 1: Complete the table below showing 4 different methods of how we dispose of biological specimens (or their waste products).

Methods for waste disposal could include:

  • Autoclave

  • Clinical waste bags

  • Sink / sluice

  • Sharps bin

  • Waste placed into specific containers

Can you think of any others?

Associated risks for each method could include:

  • Using an incorrect disposal method

  • Not following the disposal method correctly (e.g. incident due to overfilling a yellow bag)

  • A spillage / splash

  • A sharps or other injury

  • Disposing of the wrong sample (s)

  • Disposing of samples before they have been tested

Evidence 2: For this piece of evidence you will need to reflect on an incident regarding the disposal of a specimen (hint! Incidents could also include any of the associated risks mentioned above).

Use the following template to write a reflective piece on an incident you have been involved in regarding the disposal of a specimen:

Evidence 3: Choose any one method from evidence 1 above and then complete the following training plan (red sections) for instructing a new member of staff on how to dispose of samples / waste safely using this method.

Training plan (you may edit this document):

Sign off: After you have collected each piece of evidence, hand them into your trainer / mentor who will then countersign them. Please note that they may ask for additional evidence or ask you follow up questions. Also ensure that:

  1. You have date and signed your work

  2. You only submit evidence for checking once it is completed (you may take individual evidence pieces out of your portfolio)

  3. Ensure any countersigned checked work is returned back (in order) to your portfolio

Try not to hand in multiple pieces of evidence for marking at once - this will create too much work for your trainer / mentor, instead spread submissions out throughout your training.

Trainer notes: Ensure the candidates line manager completes the 'Line Manager's Comments' section as each module in the portfolio is completed - continuous assessment of the candidates work is required throughout the training period.
